My SPECIAL PLACE....

MY SPECIAL PLACE

THE SEVENTH SAND DUNE ON THE LEFT OF THE PATH.

I’m standing on a sand dune, overlooking the vast blue sea, rippling gently until it meets the sky. The sea breeze is gently blowing on my face, cooling it from the scorching sun that’s beating down.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              In the distance, the seagulls swoop and squawk, fighting over a piece of food.
I taste the salt air on my lips, and I feel peaceful, relaxed and wonder how it feels to be a seagull gliding on the whispering wind, with no deadlines, no weeks, months, or even years.
I see a man with a sun hat, crooked back and a piece of driftwood for a walking stick slowly meandering. His golden labrador on the other hand, is bounding along, running circles around him, barking at waves and being a puppy again. It skips and splashes in the foaming water, barking and begging its master to throw the stick one more time.
A father and his boy gently wrestle a rainbow coloured kite as it skips and dances in the azure sky.
I sit down on the warm sand and dig my heels in under the surface to the cooler sand, and squeeze it out again through my toes. I can smell the suntan lotion I had put on earlier, mixed with the sweat of the day. My shoulders are a toasty reddish brown colour, and they radiate the day’s warmth.
I look down the beach and see a young couple walking along the sea edge. She has her head on his shoulder, her arm round him, he’s talking and smiling, his arm wraps around her like an eagle protecting its young.
I think of my girlfriend who is far from me, across the seas in a different land. How many waves will crash on this shore before I’ll see her again? Still, it’s only a speck of sand in the time scale of things. It won’t be long before we are both sitting here, in our special place, embracing one another as we just be.
